Suckling is fundamental in the development of your child from the moment of birth.  It allows your child to regulate appetite, amount of received nourishment, and helps keep it emotionally calm and feel safe.  The soother  partially fills the strong need to suckle. Its selection should be carefully considered – the shape and construction should allow breathing and swallowing of saliva as well as not interfere with natural suckling instincts. A soother which has been incorrectly selected may have negative consequences for development of the oral cavity, speech, as well as the feeding process.

Recommendations of experts:

- reach for a soother when you observe the child starting to suckle its thumb
- remember, that even a soothert cannot replace the caring cradling of a parent
- use the teat only in instances where the child really requires it – during bed time, when irritable, and when crying increasingly
- do not dip the soothing teat in honey, sugar or other foods
